TAG QUESTIONS

TAG QUESTIONS

As TAG QUESTIONS são usadas quando queremos perguntar ou confirmar alguma informação.

Para formar uma tag question devemos seguir alguns passos.

1st - Se a frase é afirmativa, a TAG QUESTION é negativa e vice-versa.

Ex: She is funny, isn't she?

She isn't funny, is she?

2nd - Não usamos nomes próprios em TAG QUESTIONS, utilizamos sempre os PERSONAL PRONOUNS (I/YOU/HE/SHE/IT/WE/YOU/THEY)

Ex: John has a car, doesn't he?

(Perceba que ao invés de JOHN utilizamos HE)

3rd - Quando a frase possui o verbo TO BE (am,is,are,was,were) utilizamos o verbo TO BE também na TAG QUESTION.

Ex: They aren't Spanish, are they?

4th - Quando a frase possui um MODAL VERB (can,could,must,should,will,would) também utilizamos o MODAL VERB na TAG QUESTION.

Ex: Ducks can fly, can't they?

5th - Quando a frase possui a estrutura THERE TO BE, ou seja, THERE IS/THERE ARE/THERE WAS/THERE WERE, utilizamos o verbo TO BE e o THERE na TAG QUESTION.

Ex: There were many people at the party, weren't there?

(Tinha muitas pessoas na festas, não tinha?)

6th - Se a frase não se encaixa em nenhuma das alternativas acima, devemos prestar atenção no tempo verbal e usar o verbo auxiliar correspondente.

PRESENTE SIMPLES 

TAG QUESTION - DO ou DOES

She has a job, doesn't she?

They don't like French, do they?

PASSADO SIMPLES

TAG QUESTION - DID

They went to the beach, didn't they?

Joshua didn't travel last year, did he?

PRESENTE PERFEITO - HAVE / HAS

The dog has eaten all the food, hasn't it?

You haven't finished your activity, have you?

7th - Há algumas excessões:

Quando a frase possui "I am" a TAG QUESTION é "aren't I".

I am clever, aren't I?

Quando a frase possui "Let's"a TAG QUESTION é "shall we"

Let's go to the movies, shall we?

Quando a frase expressa um comando, ou seja, imperative, usamos "will"

Open the door, will you.

Open the door, won't you.

* Ambas estão corretas, mas, de acordo com Roger Woodham da BBC. Se utilizar a tag negativa, você tem uma pequena expectativa da pessoa dizer não. Quando utilizamos a tag ao imperativo ela vira um pedido, como se tivéssemos adicionado PLEASE.

8th - Palavras como NEVER fazem a frase ter um sentido negativo portanto a TAG QUESTION será afirmativa.
